Newcomers Guide
Welcome to Ideation, the world of the Edeia — a closed species created by Auspice. They are manifestations of abstract concepts that have magical abilities based on their Idea. The activities are primarily based in Deviantart and the Discord server.
See a dictionary of terms here.
Rules/Terms of Service Overview
The Rules/ToS are a little long, so here are some important points. For the full thing, see here.
In order to own an Edeia, at least one of the following must be true of you:
You have a Deviantart account.
You have a Toyhou.se account. (Invitations can be given.)
You have joined the Edeia Discord server.
Other major points:
You may use Edeia-related work for personal use only (not for profit). In all cases, you are not allowed to use Auspice's work for NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
You can use an Edeia for RPs, art, stories, etc. However, you must credit Auspice as the creator of the species.
You are not permitted to publicly discuss unofficial Edeia (Edeia not on the masterlist), with a few exceptions. In general, you are permitted to lightly mention them in a backstory, but they should not be complex.
An Edeia being made through FTO prompts can be discussed.
If you have paid for a slot for the Edeia or acquired a permanent hold for them, then you are permitted to discuss them publicly even if they have not been made.
Some flexibility with AUs (alternate universes) is allowed. Edeia can be used as AUs of other existing OCs (and other OCs can be used as AUs for them). They cannot be a shapeshift of an existing OC or such, as that would muddle the lore. The Edeia can be put into an AU setting where they are not Edeia, but this must clearly be labeled as AU.
Character theft is a bannable offense. Only the current owner of the Edeia is allowed to use their Edeia character for anything without permission from the owner. This includes alters who happen to form as someone else's character outside of your control — you cannot use someone else's character unless you have their explicit permission to do so; the alter must represent themself some other way, or you must get the owner's permission.
Unless you have the express permission by both the designer and owner of an Edeia, do not make any character designs that are "heavily inspired" or based on existing Edeia; such designs shall be referred to as "derivative designs."
You may resell your Edeia for no more than the original price it was bought for + commission work. If an Edeia was created from a free event, you may only sell it for the value of commission work. If an Edeia has been transferred, the new owner should contact Auspice or send an update in #ml-updates. An Edeia has a cooldown of two weeks for general transfers.
Alterations: You are free to change your Edeia's name, gender, and pronouns as you please; if you would like the masterlist (ML) to be updated, let Auspice know or send an update in #ml-updates. An Idea can be changed, but please do not change it too much.
Intro to Lore
A brief introduction to some of the most important lore for getting familiar with the world and developing your first Edeia character.
What are Edeia?
The Edeia (plural: Edeia, pronunciation [ee-DAY-uh]) come into being from the power of ideas — many used to be human, but any conscious creature can become one. Those who have that potential will have an Idea, a concept they identify strongly with, and magical abilities associated with that Idea. Through the discovery and exploration of their identity as well as attunement to their Idea, those beings will Actualize — their physical body is consumed and replaced with one composed entirely of their own magic.
For more information about Edeia, you can refer to the page on Edeiology.
Who can manifest an Idea?
Any conscious being native to the world of Ideation can naturally manifest Ideas on their own. Under normal circumstances, this can only occur with humans and natural animals. All supernatural beings that are not created by Edeia must originate from an external dimension and can only gain an Idea through long-term proximity to the NPC Ideation or through receiving an Idea from NPC Ideation.
Non-conscious entities, including objects and programmed constructs, can develop a soul after being influenced by Consciousness or other Edeia with similar abilities. If they develop their soul in the world of Ideation, then they would also have a chance to manifest an Idea.
For more information, see the Idea Development section and the Origins Guide.
What kinds of abilities can Edeia have?
Every Idea can manifest differently, so it can be difficult to define any common patterns in the magic. However, it should fairly clearly be connected to the concept behind their Idea or help them with existing in a way that allows them to align with their identity as their Idea. You may see Idea Ability Guidelines for some things to keep in mind.
Edeia also have some general abilities, including shapeshifting, intangibility, invisibility, their ability to use their Abstraction for teleportation and dimension crossing, energy manipulation, soul manipulation, etc. For more info, see the Abilities section.
How does an Edeia Actualize?
Actualization is the process by which a being with an Idea becomes an Edeia. The individual with the Idea, referred to as an ideated individual, must embrace their Idea as their identity, and this must be self-determined. That is, they must identify with their Idea and embrace it as something they hold personally meaningful and valuable, and this cannot stem from external influences.
Actualization is a choice and cannot be forced or happen by accident. Whether consciously or subconsciously, the to-be Edeia must be prepared to give up being who they were to become who they are.
For more information, see Actualization and Self-Determination.
What kind of world do Edeia exist in?
The world of Ideation is an "urban fantasy" world, a world much like ours but where magic has been revealed to humanity. The only form of magic that originates from this world is idea magic, magic from the power of an Idea. Any other kinds of magic and supernatural abilities come from entities from different dimensions.
Time is split into three ages:
The Ancient Era / The Age of Magic, during which magic was part of the world.
The Age of Secrecy (~1500 - 2016), the age in which the world of magic and the world of the mundane attempted to completely isolate themselves from each other.
The Age of Reunion (2016 - present, which is our year + 100), the age in which magic society and mundane society reconnected to form the reunited society.
However, Edeia do not only exist in the world of Ideation. They may have left their original dimension, or the NPC Ideation may have caused the development of Ideas in another dimension.
Edeia can also originate from other timelines of the world of Ideation. The world of Ideation has an infinitely branching timeline, where every choice creates a different timeline. There are established Continuities with the metaphysical lore of Ideation but with entirely different histories and societies, though these are not recommended for newcomers as they tend to be less developed, are more difficult to create character interactions with, and may require deeper understanding of the metaphysics of Ideation.
For more information, see Setting and the Origins Guide.
Can Edeia interact with other non-Ideation characters?
Yes! Edeia can cross dimensions fairly freely, and you are welcome to have them interact with characters from your existing worlds and from other species if the rules of other species allow it.
For more information, see Dimension Crossing.
Edeia Acquisition
If you are a first-time owner (FTO), you have a few additional options:
Discounted Notion Slot — 40 USD. This is essentially a "surprise design" with a few options for specifications.
FTO Prompts — a series of prompts FTOs can complete for an unofficial Edeia to acquire a free Edeia MYO or notion slot for that Edeia.
Nitro FTO Notion Slot (limited) — up to a certain number of boosts, a yearly reward for Nitro boosting the Ideation server can be redeemed for a notion slot.
In general, you can acquire an Edeia through premade auctions, customs (limited), notion slots, and MYOs. Customs, notions, and MYOs can also be acquired by completing monthly prompts.
See the Acquisition page for details on all these methods.
You can also poke around to see if anyone has Edeia up for offer.
Activities
What can you do in the community while you don't have an Edeia yet? Here are some options:
You can browse others' characters from #profiles-and-refs in the server. You can also check out Auspice's Edeia with full profiles here.
Some enjoy getting asked questions about their characters — check their contact preferences in #intros, and if they don't mind a ping, feel free to ask about any of your curiosities in one of the character lore channels.
You can check the current monthly prompt(s), which you can complete for Figments, a species currency. You can ask others if you can use their Edeia for prompts.
You can create a non-Edeia character or bring in your existing characters to the Ideation world. You are free to ask for relations in the character lore channels or browse the Relation-Seeking Masterpost for those seeking relationships with their Edeia.
You can give these non-Edeia characters an Idea or not. Several Edeia have the ability to give others magical abilities, if that is something you're interested in.
Your non-Edeia characters can be made into official Edeia at a later time if you wish—however, you cannot publicly discuss their potential Actualization into an Edeia in great detail until you have an Edeia slot paid for. Minor discussions, such as contemplations about them becoming an Edeia and asking for thoughts on what Idea they should be, are acceptable.
What about activities after you get your Edeia?
There is a Development Guide for getting started with development.
Completing a Conceptualization form is highly recommended. The exercise can give a structure to help you think about your Edeia's backstory, abilities, and other elements of their character; Auspice's review can also help you improve your understanding of the lore and correct any misconceptions.
Building a profile on Toyhou.se is also encouraged. It does not need any complex coding, so long as the information is there, but you can have fun with the layout. For examples, you can see complete profiles from Auspice, VoidGremlin (logged in to TH only), CaeliGlori, and SymeSynth.
Pinky creates many templates for Toyhou.se profiles, some of which are free and some of which are paid.
For coding help, you are welcome to ask in the Discord server. Google can be helpful as well.
You can now complete the current monthly prompt(s) for your own Edeia! These may help with developing some details and stories with your Edeia.
Many members of the community greatly enjoy relations. You are welcome to post in the Relation-Seeking Masterpost or browse for others who are seeking relations.
Some may prefer that you already have at least a basic profile for your Edeia before discussing a relation, while others don't mind discussing from scratch. You might find it easier to develop your Edeia through the process of forming relations with others, especially those more experienced in Ideation.
You can freely discuss your ideas for your Edeia character in the character lore channels, whether you're lore-dumping, seeking thoughts and feedback, or sharing any little thoughts you might have.
SymeSynth sometimes opens offers for assisting with developing an Edeia. See here for status and details.
If you like fusions, you can think about making fusions with others' Edeia or between your Edeia and your non-Edeia characters.
