Ideated Individuals

Ideated individuals are those who have manifested an Idea. For examples, you can view Auspice's gallery of previous forms for their Edeia. These individuals have varying levels of identification with their Idea, and varying levels of identified vs. introjected regulation. Those who have greater levels of synchronicity of identity with their Idea, and with greater levels of identified regulation when expressing an Idea, tend to have more powerful abilities and more alterations in appearance. They often have reduced physical needs (food, sleep, etc.) and may slow or stop aging.

Ideated individuals can have an extremely high level of attunement to their Idea without Actualizing; perhaps they more or less fully identify with their Idea but simply choose not to step across the threshold to Actualize. They can also purposefully aim towards deeper identification with their Idea to gain powers, though there may be consequences (see the Magic and Side Effects subsection). Being on the borderline of Actualization can be uncomfortable, however, like their skin does not quite fit, or that they are sitting on the edge of a cliff without any railing. The exact feeling differs from person to person, and they can learn to tune it out, but it would be undeniably present. Most of those at the edge instinctively withdraw and re-identify with their identity as their current species, at least somewhat, to settle back into their skin.

Magic and Side Effects

The magic of ideated individuals tends to be significantly weaker than they would as an Edeia, and they can experience side effects when using their magic. The more powerful an ideated individual's magic, the more side effects they tend to experience when they use their magic. If they do not use their magic, they can avoid the side effects, but greater power also often comes with decreased control. Powerful ideated individuals may have passive abilities they cannot control, or their abilities might activate by instinct if they feel that they are in danger or if they sense a "target," whether consciously or subconsciously. (For an example of a "target," an individual with a high level of latent malice could be a target for someone with an Idea of Malice, and the one ideated with Malice may instinctively draw out the target's malice.)

The side effects of idea magic are a result of the energy of idea magic causing instabilities in the connection of the soul to the "body," whether that is a biological body, an aggregation of energy, or a computer/hard drive for a digital being. This can manifest in all sorts of ways, both physical effects (tiredness, dizziness, hunger, specific cravings, body aches, loss of sensation and/or locomotion, etc.) and psychological effects (intrusive thoughts, odd dreams, nightmares, a sense of dissociation from their body, anxiety, confusion, etc.). For the most part, these effects are temporary, though there may be some slight shortening of lifespan

When an ideated individual starts overusing their magic (high intensity over a short time or prolonged usage without enough rest), they tend to lose consciousness as an instinctive safety mechanism. If they push through it through sheer force of willpower, side effects more be more severe and cause long-term effects, such as drastically reduced lifespan. In an extreme case, the individual's soul may be cleaved from their body. An Edeia could grab the soul and put it back, but the individual would be essentially vegetative for several days to weeks and their lifespan would be drastically reduced. While ideated individuals tend to have an extended lifespan, there is still a limit. Depending on the person, they might not appear to age, but as they near the end of their life, they might become more and more lethargic, dissociative, or ill in other ways before losing consciousness and not waking up. As a note, effects on the body tend to be more dispersed; decaying and dissolving of parts of the body tends not to occur unless the effect is related to the individual's specific Idea magic.

Some individuals may employ various methods to reduce side effects. For instance, if they are granted immortality by another Edeia, they do not have to be concerned about lifespan. However, something always manifests. The only kind of "body" 100% compatible with an individual's Idea magic is their Edeia form.

Appearance Alterations

An ideated individual often, but not always, manifests changes in their appearance. This is both an adaptation that allows their body to tolerate the energy of idea magic better, and also a manifestation of their self-image and interpretation of their Idea. The more the body changes, the less severe the side effects. Still, there is a limit to how much the body can change, and the side effects for powerful abilities or intense/prolonged usage would likely be severe. While lifespan is usually much extended for Ideated individuals, taxing the body so much could lead to that extended lifespan being shortened somewhat.

An ideated individual can subconsciously adjust the "throttle" for change; that is, if they are more welcoming to changes, more changes will occur and the more significant they are. However, changes are much slower to reverse; this generally only happens if there is a drastic disconnection from the Idea. Eye color typically changes first, though later on, hair color and skin color may change. In rare cases, there can be drastic changes in physical form. If an ideated individual's magic is unstable (whether caused by emotional instability or lack of control over the magic), then drastic changes can be more likely.

Below are some examples of the types of changes in appearance an ideated individual can undergo. Many individuals only go so far as minor changes; some manifest major changes of one type without any changes in another - for instance, Thaene manifesting a halo (major anatomical alteration) but not any changes in the coloration or material of his body.

Changes in Eyes

The first, and sometimes the only, change in appearance in ideated individuals is a change in their eyes. Almost all individuals experience minor changes, with some manifesting major changes when they have greater attunement to their Idea.

Normal

For reference. Similar alterations can occur in other species.

Minor

Changes in color of iris and pupil; could have a glow

Major

Full color changes, changes in eye structure/shapes and material/texture

Changes in Hair/Body Coloration and Material

A majority of ideated individuals manifest minor changes in coloration (hair color/length change). Moderate changes are fairly common for those who are near Actualization. Major changes are rare to see, and tend to be related to the individual's interpretation of their Idea, especially for full-body changes. In the case that the body's material is changed, the core structure and function of the original biology are usually maintained.

Normal

For reference. Similar alterations can occur in other species.

Minor

Changes in hair color/length. Can also have changes in coloration of other existing keratinous structures (nails, talons, horns, etc. if the species has them).

Moderate

Changes in color of skin, internal tissues, blood, teeth, and any other parts or fluids of the body; new markings, unnatural hair characteristics (glowing, unnaturally silky or clean, etc.), change in hair material

Major

Partial or full body material alteration and unnatural body characteristics (floating/disconnected limbs, altered matter phase, etc.). Can include alteration of the material of blood and other body fluids. Full body tends to only occur for a few on the edge of Actualization.

Changes in Anatomy

Anatomical changes are much less common compared to changes to eyes and coloration, though a fair number of ideated individuals manifest minor alterations early on. Moderate anatomical manifestations are less common, but those near Actualization are fairly likely to experience it. Major alterations are rare to see, with most individuals not manifesting these changes even when on the edge of Actualization, though there may be some who do not have any more common alterations and directly manifest a major alteration.

For the most part, ideated individuals tend to keep the same base body shape. Extreme alterations do not occur unless there is relevance to the individual's Idea of if there are effects of other magic. For instance, an individual with an Idea such as Observation might manifest multiple eyes, and one with an Idea such as Multitasking may manifest multiple limbs. An individual with a horror-related idea might experience minor distortions of body proportions. In general, unless you feel it is truly important, it is discouraged to have extreme changes in anatomy.

Changes in anatomy can occur gradually or rapidly, and may come with physical discomfort or pain, and the awkwardness of getting used to new limbs. More rapid growth tends to be more painful, and can even be bloody (via new appendages/structures bursting out), though once the transformation is over, injuries heal rapidly and pain quickly fades. Slower growth may come with a dull pain or slight itchiness, though it tends not to be accompanied by injury. Whether it is fast or slow depends on the individual's preference at a subconscious level; those who welcome changes and want to get it over with may not experience anatomical alterations for a longer time before going through a rapid, painful transformation that is quickly over with.

Minor

Fairly common and early manifestations.

Moderate

Less common manifestations that tend to occur for those closer to Actualization.

Major

Rare manifestations that may occur for those close to Actualization.

Extreme

These manifestations do not occur without relevance to their Idea or effects of other magic.
